Shear wave elastography is a simple test that checks for fibrosis, a condition that reduces blood flow to and from the liver. The test measures your METAVAIR score, which shows the degree of damage to the liver.

About the test

  • A scan will be done of your stomach area, including the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen.

    We'll ask you to hold your breath at different times during the exam. Warm ultrasound gel will be put on your abdomen and cleaned off after the scan is done. The ultrasound will take about 45 minutes.

    OR
    • Don’t eat or drink for six hours before your elastography ultrasound. This helps us get a clear picture during the exam.
    • Wear comfortable clothing.
