Breast ultrasound can help your doctor find breast problems. It can also help find out if an area of the breast has an abnormal (not a normal shape) growth or a growth that has fluid in it.

Breast ultrasound can help us find out if an abnormal growth is cancerous or benign (not cancer). If more tests are needed, your doctor may want you to have a biopsy.

A breast biopsy is when a small sample is taken from your breast. The biopsy may help your doctor find answers to questions about your health.

The breast biopsy may be done by a breast radiologist or a doctor who specializes in taking images of parts of the body. They may use ultrasound while doing the biopsy.

Breast ultrasound information

Accordion Block v2
  • Breast ultrasound is often used with breast mammography to find breast problems and understand them better. Mammography is used to screen for breast cancer. It uses X-rays to take digital images of the breast.

During your exam, you will lie either on your back facing up or on your side. The female sonographer will put a gel on your skin. Next, she will move a scanning tool over your body to get the images we need.

The exam takes about 30 minutes.
