Physical medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with functional restoration of a person affected by physical disability. A medical doctor specializing in physical medicine is known as a physiatrist. Physiatrists are experts in treating injuries or illnesses that affect movement as it relates to
nerves, muscles and bones. This most often involves the diagnosis and treatment of pain with the goal of restoring maximum function lost through injury, illness, or disabling conditions. This may include such conditions as back pain, including strains, bulging discs and pinched nerves; joint problems, such as tendonitis, bursitis, strains and sprains; and sports injuries.
The Polyclinic’s physical medicine department emphasizes non-surgical methods of treatment with minimal use of narcotics. (Please note that interventional pain medicine may not be suitable for pregnant women.)
