What is a hospitalist?

Hospitalists are doctors who focus solely on taking care of hospitalized patients. Their work includes:

  • Admitting you to the hospital and seeing you daily
  • Coordinating all hospital care, including tests, treatment plans and discharge planning
  • Communicating with your primary care physician and other care providers as needed
  • Keeping you and your family informed about your care
  • Managing your care with surgeons and specialists before and after surgery

If you have a Polyclinic primary care provider and are admitted to Swedish Medical Center First Hill, a Polyclinic hospitalist will manage your care during your stay.

About our hospitalist program

Our hospitalists are board-certified, internal medicine doctors. Each has an average of 14 years of experience as a hospitalist. This is significantly higher than the national average.

We started our program at Swedish Medical Center in 2005. Our hospitalists usually work seven days in a row, so chances are you’ll see the same person every day. This allows your hospitalist to get to know you and your condition well.
