Education:
Following graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, with a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, Dr. Rooney received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, and a spine fellowship with San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders/UCSD in San Diego, California.
Special Interests:
Dr. Rooney is a comprehensive spine surgeon with an emphasis on complex spine surgery (revision, nonunion, cancer, and trauma), disc replacement, cervical spine surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Rooney treats adult and pediatric scoliosis, including the administration and follow-up of the ScoliScore test for particular pediatric scoliosis patients.
Practice Philosophy:
"Patients are much better ‘patients' when they are participants in their care, so it is important for me to spend as much time with each patient as they require for them to understand the nature of their problem and their treatment plan."

Dr. Rooney served as Director, Spinal Reconstructive Surgery, William Beaumont Army Medical Center -Texas Tech University Orthopaedic Surgery Residency in El Paso, Texas, and as Assistant Professor, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

2002 Lloyd Taylor Award. Western Orthopaedic Association’s best resident paper presentation at 2002 annual meeting.
Louis A. Goldstein Award. Scoliosis Research Society’s best clinical poster at 2002 annual meeting. “Dual Rod Posterior Instrumentation Without Fusion for the Treatment of Progressive Early Onset Scoliosis: A Multi-center Study.”

Dr. Rooney likes the outdoors, reading, and is an accomplished athlete. He’s been a member of: EIVA 1st Team, Volleyball 1991; Brine 1st Team Academic All American-Volleyball 1991; All-Army Volleyball Team 1997; and All-Armed Forces Volleyball Team 1997.
