Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty) can enhance your appearance by removing excess skin, fat and muscle from your upper and lower eyelids. This results in a more youthful and refreshed look to the area surrounding your eyes. It can also relieve vision impairment caused by factors such as drooping eyelids.

Depending on your particular goals and the structure of your eyelids, you may have surgery on just your upper eyelids, your lower eyelids or all four eyelids. The procedure may be done at the same time as other facial cosmetic surgeries such as a facelift or brow lift.

What happens during the procedure?

Eyelid surgery usually takes about two hours. It is performed in our office, and you will receive a deep sedative anesthesia to help ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Typically, you will be able to return home shortly after the surgery is completed. Incisions are made along the natural lines of your eyelids – in the creases of your upper eyelids and right below the lashes of your lower lids. The incisions, and any resulting scars, will be hidden from view within the eyelid area. Through the incisions, Dr. Kyllo separates the fatty tissue and muscle from the skin, in order to remove excess fat, skin and muscle. Tiny sutures are then used to close the incisions.

Stitches can usually be removed after about a week. Swelling and bruising will begin to decrease at this time, too, and soon you will see the results of surgery. This includes better-defined eyelids and a more alert, refreshed appearance.

Best candidates for eyelid surgery

Before you undertake surgery, we will need to ask you some questions about your health, surgery goals and other factors. There are certain medical conditions that make eyelid surgery more risky. These include: dry eyes, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, glaucoma or Graves disease. In addition, after discussing your surgery goals, we may recommend that another type of facial cosmetic surgery or skin rejuvenation process could help you better meet your objectives.
