Breast Reduction

Besides feeling self-conscious about their appearance, women with oversized breasts often experience physical pain, discomfort and health issues that limit their ability to lead a normal, active life.

Breast reduction surgery can help alleviate these problems. During surgery, excess breast fat, tissue and skin is removed, resulting in breasts that are better balanced with the rest of the body. If needed, your surgeon can also reposition the areolas and nipples, and reduce the size of areolas that have grown larger over time as skin has stretched.

Oversized breasts (breast hypertrophy) usually occur during or soon after puberty. They can also happen when pregnancy-related breast enlargement lasts into the future. Larger-than-normal breasts occur in men, too. Known as gynecomastia, male breast enlargement can be the result of hormonal changes, disease, heredity or the use of certain drugs. In such cases, men may be candidates for breast reduction surgery as well.

Insurance often covers the cost of breast reduction surgery, with coverage depending on the amount of breast tissue removed. We can help you determine if you’ll be covered and what paperwork you’ll need to submit to your insurance company.

What happens during the procedure?

Breast reduction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day. You will be given a deep sedative anesthesia that may be supplemented with a regional block type anesthesia. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery.

The procedure lasts from two to three hours. An incision will typically be made around the areola, vertically down the breast and then horizontally along the crease beneath the breast. Through the incision, Dr. Kyllo removes excess skin, tissue and fat in order to reshape, reduce and/or lift the breasts. The nipple and areola will be repositioned on the newly shaped breast. Breast reduction surgery for men usually does not require skin removal and sometimes may be accomplished with liposuction alone.

After surgery, your incisions will be covered with dressings or bandages, and you may need to wear a support bra as your breasts heal. We will send you home with other guidelines to follow to ensure that you heal properly. The healing process lasts for several weeks as swelling decreases and your breasts settle into their new shape and position. The final results will begin to be more evident a few months after surgery.

Best candidates for breast reduction surgery

The best candidates for this procedure include physically and mentally healthy women whose oversized breasts have resulted in health problems, limited their everyday activities and/or made them feel uncomfortable about their appearance.
We perform the surgery on women of various ages (including teenagers), but breast development should be complete. In addition, if you are pregnant and planning on breastfeeding, we recommend you wait until you’ve finished breastfeeding before undergoing surgery. During your consultation, we will discuss other health issues that could impact surgery.
