Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a popular surgery for women who want to increase the size of their breasts, or improve their appearance after childbirth or weight loss. It can also help improve symmetry in women whose breasts are somewhat disproportionate in shape and size. Breast augmentation involves surgically inserting implants either under the chest muscle or behind breast tissue. Type, size and placement of the implants are based on your breast anatomy, your desired increase in size as well as the recommendation of your surgeon.

There are two types of implants – saline-filled or silicone-filled. Each has specific benefits and features that will be discussed during your consultation. Both types of implants have proven to be safe after undergoing numerous research studies. During your consultation, we can thoroughly discuss any questions you may have about implant safety as well as other implant-related topics.

It is important to know upfront that neither saline nor silicone implants are guaranteed to last a lifetime. You may need surgery in the future to replace one or both. Major physical changes to your body, such as those caused by pregnancy, weight loss and menopause can also impact the appearance of augmented breasts.

What happens during the procedure?

Breast augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, and you’ll be able to go home the same day. You’ll receive a deep sedative type anesthesia to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during surgery. The procedure usually lasts one to two hours.

The incision can be made in several different locations, depending on your anatomy, the type of implant being used and the degree of enlargement. Common incision sites include the crease under the breast, the underarm area or the edge of the areola. Once the incisions have been made, Dr. Kyllo then inserts the implants under the chest muscle or underneath breast tissue.

After surgery, your incisions will be covered with dressings or bandages. We may recommend you wear a support bra to lessen swelling and provide extra support during the healing process. The healing of the incision sites will take about a week. You should be able to return to work within several days. Return to full physical activity may take up to a month. The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible after surgery.

Best candidates for breast-augmentation surgery

Women of any age can undergo breast augmentation surgery, but we do recommend that the breasts be fully developed before surgery. Otherwise developmental changes in the breasts can impact the results of surgery.
