Special Interests:

Dr. Smith focuses his practice exclusively on the diseases of the breast, evaluating and managing about 1200 breast patients per year.  Dr. Smith’s surgical interests include nipple sparing mastectomy, lumpectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy and oncoplastic surgery of the breast, the purpose of which is to improve cosmetic and oncologic outcomes with complex breast lumpectomies.   

At The Polyclinic, Dr. Smith chairs the Breast Cancer Tumor Board, a group of specialists who meet on a weekly basis to discuss and determine best treatment plans for each newly diagnosed patient with breast cancer. 

Practice Philosophy:

Along with experience and expertise, Dr. Smith has a strong collaborative approach to breast cancer care.  While in Austin, the doctor worked with several colleagues, including a physical medicine specialist, to develop innovative breast cancer programs focusing on wellness, education and patient survivorship and rehabilitation.  Dr. Smith brings the same type of innovation and drive for collaboration to his role at The Polyclinic with genuine empathy for his patients, providing efficient care and state of the art techniques. 

Teaching and Community Involvement:

Dr. Smith comes to The Polyclinic from Surgical Associates of Austin, Texas, a well known multispecialty surgery group, where he has successfully led that group for ten years.  He has also served as physician liaison, Breast Cancer Resource Center, ran in the Race for the Cure and served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. David’s Hospital from 2007-2009. He currently serves on the committees for consensus and education of the American Society of Breast Disease.

Personal Information:

Married to a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist; two children.  Dr. Smith speaks conversational Spanish and German.  Having run cross country and track at Duke University, he continues to enjoy running and fitness, as well as spending time with his family.
