Polyclinic physical therapists routinely screen all patients age 65 or older who are referred for physical therapy for balance problems and a history of falls. The screening is done regardless of the original diagnosis for which patient seeks physical therapy and reflects the clinic’s commitment to help prevent falls among the elderly.
Patients of all ages who experience balance problems due to weakness, deconditioning, or prolonged illness, can also request evaluation and treatment by a physical therapist. After a thorough assessment of a patient’s neuromuscular status, the physical therapist will design specific exercises to improve strength and sharpen coordination and balance. Other services include gait training and education on safety and fall prevention.
Clinic staff also uses the popular and versatile Nintendo Wii game console to add excitement and challenge to the balance exercise program for our patients. Patients who do not purchase this device for home use can still benefit from the Wii’s video balance exercises under the supervision of their therapist while in the clinic.
Patients with certain inner ear conditions that cause dizziness and unsteadiness may also benefit from specific interventions and exercises that reduce these symptoms.
Promoting safety at home is also an important part of the Balance program. Click here for more tips on preventing falls.
